Software ROI Guide: Instagram's CEO confirms that hashtags don't work

Instagram's CEO Confirms that Hashtags Don't Work

video preview

Instagram's CEO Adam Mosseri, confirmed very casually in a street interview that hashtags don't work (and apparently have not for a long time). The interview was considered a big get as Mosseri had never before confirmed this as a fact.

But did Mosseri share exactly how Instagram users can beat the algorithm? No, it remains a strict secret.

"No silver bullets. No silver bullets. You've got to experiment and make sure you're true to yourself, and also figure out what resonates.

"What works for this week might not work next year."

Mosseri also advised creators to "find the overlap between what you want to get out of the platform and what's gonna resonate on the platform."

Credit to Jade Beason who reviewed Instagram’s blog for tips on how to make the new algorithm work in your favour.

  1. Post regularly
  2. Create content that can stand on its own
  3. Amplify your content with audio.
  4. Keep experimenting.
  5. Embrace unpredictability.

I don’t know about you, but most small business owners do not have the time to try and experiment or embrace unpredictability. When you’ve got limited time to get your work done, figuring out an algorithm comes dead last on my to do list.

What's your source for stable, predictable traffic?

As I wrote in this article, more business owners are moving away from social media. Unpredictability of algorithms is a core reason.

Alternatives for stable traffic include:

a) Email Marketing — Your own audience

Why: Email still delivers one of the highest ROIs in digital marketing. Once someone’s on your list, no algorithm can hide your content from them.

b) Local SEO & Google Business Profile (works for service businesses)

Why: For businesses with a local angle, Google Maps and local search results are more productive and are much less volatile than social algorithms.

c) Partnerships, Collaborations, & Referrals

Why: Human relationships and networks don’t get de-prioritized by an algorithm.

d) Content on Evergreen Platforms

Why: Platforms like YouTube, Pinterest, and podcasts act like search engines, not social feeds. Content can drive traffic for months or years.

YouTube is the #2 search engine, while Pinterest is huge for DIY, health, finance, home decor and fashion.

e) Your website

Why: It’s the only thing you truly own online besides your email list.
